This is the sister wine to the Florão White I reviewed previously, so please take a look at that review for the Symington back story. This red comes from Quinta da Fonte Souto in Portugal’s Alentejo region, where the vineyards sit high up in Portalegre.
This 2022 vintage is a blend of 35% Alicante Bouschet, 25% Syrah, 25% Aragonez, 10% Alfrocheiro and 5% unspecified old vines.
There’s a lovely mix of blackberry, plum, chocolate, dried herbs, liquorice and caramel on the aromas. Deep in colour, it delivers plenty of ripe dark fruit, wrapped in a soft structure with a warming touch of spice. It’s dry, full-bodied and smooth, with low to medium tannins that sit comfortably alongside all the rich fruit. The finish is warm and spicy, but it’s the overall roundness that really stays with me that’s partly due to the 14.5% ABV.
There’s a lovely balance and an easy-going richness here that makes it a real pleasure to drink. It is even more impressive when you consider that the estate describes this as its approachable, entry-level wine. Available from Ocado for £15.75.
