I picked up this wine as Aldi’s ‘Wine of the Week’, and at a sort of giveaway price it felt very much like a bottle designed to get people through the doors
There’s no vintage and no mention of the producer, so I did not expect much, but it turned out to be a pleasant surprise. The producer code, IT/VI/4816, seems to point towards Cantina di Soave / Cadis 1898, a name associated with high price ‘Maximilian I’ Prosecco.
Extra Dry is actually sweeter than Brut, which is a bit confusing because “extra dry” sounds as though it should be drier. In the glass, that usually means something a little softer and fruitier, rather than sweet in a dessert-wine way.
It has a pale lemon colour with plenty of bubbles. There is pear, apple and white flowers in the aromatics. Served cold, it is fresh, citrusy and nicely fresh. As it warms up, more pear and apple come through, with a slightly grapey feel too. The finish is fresh, gentle and softly fruity.
Amazing for the price. The relatively low alcohol, 10.5%, probably helps keep the cost down, but at only £4.69, this is a bit of a bargain.
