Capaia One

Posted by

Capaia One is the flagship red wine from Capaia Estate, located in the village of Philadelphia within the Tygerberg district, just north of Cape Town, South Africa. The estate benefits from a climate that allows the grapes to ripen slowly, resulting in wines with concentrated and complex flavours.

Made by winemaker Stephan von Neipperg, who also owns two Grand Cru Classé estates in Saint-Émilion, this wine is made with the same level of precision as the finest Bordeaux châteaux. The blend consists of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 18% Shiraz, 13% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Petit Verdot. Each varietal is fermented separately before being carefully blended, resulting in a wine that showcases both structure and elegance.

At 14.5% ABV, the 2021 vintage has already earned impressive accolades, winning a Double Gold from Gilbert & Gaillard in 2024 and a Gold Medal at the 2024 Vogue Wine and Spirits Awards. Even without decanting, there are expressive aromas of blackcurrant, leather and a very subtle sweetness. The first impression is a luxurious mouthfeel, almost akin to a fortified wine. The taste is dry, rich and complex, with layers of blackcurrant, leather and a touch of smokiness, all balanced by just the right amount of tannins to provide structure and depth.

This dry red wine is expected to develop beautifully over the next ten years, making it an excellent investment for any wine lover. At just £14.49 as part of a mix-six offer from Majestic, it offers outstanding value for a wine of this calibre.
