Laurent Delaunay is a talented winemaker and fifth-generation Burgundy wine producer who moved to Languedoc-Roussillon. This wine is made by rising talent Jeanne Delaunay, the sixth generation of the family.
Les Fruits Sauvages refers to the wild plants that grow along the edges of the vineyards. The grapes come from the foothills of the Cévennes, the Aude Valley, the Limoux region and the plains of the Hérault.
This is the 2023 vintage, with an alcohol level of 13.5%. It is clearly popular on the Majestic website, where 100% of, many, reviewers said they would buy it again.
It has a medium lemon-gold colour. Ripe apple, pear and nectarine come through first, followed by hazelnut, butter and toast. In the mouth, it is generous and full of stone and orchard fruit, with a lovely rounded texture and plenty of nutty oak complexity. It is dry, medium-full in body, with medium acidity and a long, rich, nutty finish.
Do not let the ‘Chardonnay’ name put you off. Chardonnay can sometimes have a bad reputation, and it is actually quite unusual for a French wine to display the grape variety so prominently. I love this one, and I do not usually like Chardonnay. There is oak, but it is not overly rich or sickly.
The producer recommends serving it at 12°C, and I agree. It is ideal around 30 minutes after taking it out of the fridge. Leave it any longer and the oak becomes more pronounced, so set the temperature according to your own preference.
