One of the most divisive wine questions is, is it acceptable to put ice in wine?
Wine traditionalists tend to say no. Their argument is that wine has been carefully produced to achieve a particular balance of flavour, aroma, acidity and alcohol. As ordinary ice melts, it adds water to the glass and gradually changes that balance. A crisp white wine may become thin, while the fruit and complexity of a rosé can fade. In their view, adding ice means undoing some of the winemaker’s work.
Other drinkers are far less concerned about convention. They argue that wine should be enjoyed however you want. On a hot summer afternoon, a warm glass of white or rosé can be unpleasant and a few ice cubes may make it much more refreshing. If someone prefers their wine cold, why should etiquette prevent them from enjoying it that way?
Both sides have a reasonable point. Ordinary ice cools wine quickly, but it also dilutes it. Not using ice protects the flavour, but it may leave the drink warmer than you would like. Fortunately, there is a third option that avoids both problems and that is reusable plastic ice cubes.

Plastic ice cubes are sealed, food-safe cubes filled with water or cooling gel. They are stored in the freezer and added to a drink in the same way as ordinary ice. The difference is that the liquid remains inside the cube as it warms, so nothing melts into the wine.
This means the wine becomes cooler without becoming weaker or more watery. Its character is preserved, yet the drinker can still enjoy it at a refreshing temperature. It is a practical compromise between wine tradition and personal preference.
Reusable cubes also offer a degree of control. One or two can gently lower the temperature of a glass without making it excessively cold and they can also be removed, if necessary. This matters because wine served too cold can lose some of its aroma and flavour. The aim is not to freeze the drink, but to bring it to a temperature that feels pleasant.
They are also convenient for informal occasions. A bottle may warm up during a picnic, barbecue or garden party, especially if there is no ice bucket nearby. Keeping a set of reusable cubes in a freezer bag or cool box provides a quick solution.
