Piccini Collezione Oro Chianti Superiore by Piccini. Collezione Oro translates to Gold Collection, and the range represents their more refined, region expressive wines that showcase both tradition and innovation. Chianti Superiore is a sub category of the Chianti DOCG, requiring stricter quality standards, slightly riper grapes and lower yields compared to base Chianti.
The 2024 vintage is made from 85% Sangiovese and 15% Merlot. Fermentation takes place in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks, with gentle extraction techniques ensuring a graceful expression of tannins and vibrant fruit. The wine is aged for eight months in concrete vats and comes in at 13% abv.
In the glass it has a medium ruby colour. The aroma centres on cherry, which carries through clearly on the taste. It is medium bodied, with medium tannins and a medium to long finish.
This wine arrived alongside two others from the Co-op. It is perfectly pleasant and enjoyable, yet it did make me question why I would choose it over the excellent Irresistible Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Riserva or the Arpeggio Nero d’Avola. I much preferred the Montepulciano, while my wife leaned towards the Arpeggio. As the Piccini is indeed the more expensive bottle, that becomes an important consideration. Stylistically it sits between the other two. The key difference is the Piccini branding rather than a Co-op white label. If the aim is to impress visually, this is the bottle to reach for. If you want something that bridges styles and keeps a mixed group happy, this is probably the safer bet.
Usually £11 at Co-op, it is currently reduced by £2 to £9 until 17 February 2026.
