The Decanter World Wine Awards, or DWWA, are an annual international wine competition run by Decanter, the leading wine publication. Wines are tasted blind by expert judging panels and assessed in organised flights by country, region, colour, grape, style, vintage and price point, meaning each bottle is judged against comparable peers.
I have been taking a closer look at the more affordable winners, specifically those listed as ‘value’, priced under £14.99. Domaine de la Clartière Terres de Paillé 2024 stands out as the only Platinum value wine.
There are, however, 123 Gold value winners, including some even available from supermarkets. If you go looking for these wines, take care to check you are buying the correct vintage. Decanter often judges wines before they reach retail shelves, and older stock can remain available for quite some time.
Also, don’t dismiss wines simply because they haven’t won a Decanter or other award. Wines have to be submitted for consideration, and the majority that aren’t submitted will not have been assessed for awards at all.
