I first came across this drink at a recent Tesco press tasting. Usually, I’m guilty of ignoring anything that doesn’t fall neatly into my admittedly narrow definition of wine. But I was glad I made an exception here. Among the Spritzi flavours on offer at the tasting, Elderflower, Blood Orange and Yuzu & Pink Pepper, it was the latter, a new flavour, that stood out for me. Curious and impressed, I made a mental note to revisit it properly. Since then, a bottle had been quietly languishing in the fridge, waiting for its moment. That moment came with the recent…

In March 2025, I went to the Tesco Spring Summer Press Tasting in London, where a large line-up of 152 wines was showcased, including 19 new wines. One of the most notable developments was Tesco’s move towards greater sustainability in its wine packaging. Working in collaboration with the Sustainable Wine Roundtable (SWR) and various suppliers, Tesco has introduced lighter 300g bottles into its own-label range from February 2025. This step has already resulted in the removal of 155 tonnes of glass from production, a reduction in carbon emissions and success in meeting the SWR Bottle Accord target, achieving an average…

Coming from the coastal San Antonio region in Chile, Cono Sur 20 Barrels Pinot Noir is made using traditional Burgundy vinification methods. This wine is aged in a mix of foudres and partially new oak barrels, adding depth and complexity to its character. This 2021 vintage has earned considerable acclaim, receiving 93 points from Tim Atkin, a Silver Medal at the International Wine Challenge (IWC) and 92 points from the International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC). Notably, it is now part of Tesco’s new premium wine selection, previously accessible only through independent wine merchants. My first encounter with it was…

Tesco has introduced another noteworthy addition to its wine range as part of its, previously mentioned, continued focus on premium offerings. Cap Maritime Pinot Noir, imported by New Generation Wines, is also available through select independent wine merchants. This South African wine comes from the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley in the Cape South Coast region. The 2023 vintage, by winemaker Gottfried Mocke, has an alcohol level of 13% and reflects a deliberate winemaking style that prioritises texture and perfume over the opulence of primary fruit. Aged for 12 months in French barriques, the wine is also vegan and has earned a…

From Tesco’s Autumn Winter Tasting, it became clear that Tesco are focusing on adding more premium wine offerings. This shift and market conditions has encouraged some wine producers/importers, who once avoided supplying supermarkets, to reconsider, with Tesco now starting to compete more with retailers like Majestic and independent wine shops. With this in mind, I decided to start reviewing some of these premium selections, beginning with El Enemigo Cabernet Franc that has a high 4.3 on Vivino, 99/100 from James Suckling and 92/100 from Robert Parker. This wine, supplied through C&C Group/Bibendum Wine, is notable for being bottled at source,…

The Drinks Business is reporting that Tesco shoppers have voiced frustration online over popular wine brands reducing alcohol content, with some accusing producers of quietly lowering alcohol by volume (ABV) levels. Due to rising UK import duties based on alcohol levels, producers are cutting ABVs on budget wines to manage costs. Concha y Toro, for instance, reduced its Isla Negra brand’s ABV from 12% to 10.5%, while Blossom Hill Rosé and Hardys Stamp Shiraz Cabernet also saw cuts. Several Tesco customers expressed disappointment, describing the wines as weaker and less flavourful, with some wishing the original versions were still available,…

This wine, produced by Castel Frères, stood out to me during a Tesco Summer tasting and I even highlighted it in a roundup at the time. However, it wasn’t until recently that I had the chance to explore this wine in more detail. Now, I’m convinced this is my top pick for the best quality Provence rosé for the price, this year. Great Provence rosés can be quite pricey, often starting at around £15. Despite the cost, many tend to lack flavour, as confirmed by Patrick Schmitt MW during a masterclass I attended. He said that the pressing of the…

In September 2024, I had the opportunity to attend a Tesco Autumn Winter Tasting event, where I got to look at the exciting changes in their wine selection. Tesco has just completed its most significant update to their wine range in 15 years, introducing 130 new products. Notably, there’s been an increase in the number of premium wines on offer. These changes come against the backdrop of a downturn in wine sales across the industry. However, Tesco has chosen to see this challenge as an opportunity. Many wine producers who previously avoided supplying supermarkets are now more open to doing…

Unusually, this review of English Kingscote Sparkling begins with its price. Originally sold at £18 in Tesco, it recently became discounted to £12 and then available for a mere £9 during a special 25% off offer. But how does an Sparkling English wine, typically retailing at £20 or much more, end up at such a low price? The answer lies in the labelling and the winemaking process. This wine is labelled as “Sparkling Wine of England” rather than “English Sparkling Wine” The difference? Kingscote is made using the Charmat method, where the second fermentation occurs quickly in a large tank…
