C.V.N.E Cune Rioja Reserva 2019 is a blend of Tempranillo (85%), Garnacha and Mazuelo grapes and has an ABV of 14%. The grapes for Cune Reserva are sourced from the estate’s own vineyards, known as Caballeros, Santo Tomás and Sarnamoros in the prestigious Rioja Alta region. Grapes are aged in a combination of French and American oak barrels with the wine spending 50% more time in the barrels than legally required. This extended ageing lends the wine added finesse and a softer texture.
I would recommend giving this wine some time to breathe, as it initially appeared more restrained than anticipated, with less expression on the nose and palate. Though medium-bodied and not overly tannic, it fully revealed itself after a brief period of decanting, which enhanced its aromas and flavours.
Following decanting, the wine gave aromas of red fruit, accompanied by hints of vanilla and a light touch of spice. On tasting, there were flavours of cherry, blackberry and plum, delicately accented by a slight tobacco note. The soft tannins provide a smooth and pleasant mouthfeel, making this Rioja easily approachable and enjoyable for all wine drinkers.
Widely available from retailers such as Sainsbury’s, Majestic, Ocado, Booths and Morrisons, C.V.N.E Cune Rioja Reserva 2019 is typically priced between £9.50 and £13.50.
