The Bodegas Ángeles de Amaren Rioja 2017 is a modern interpretation of Rioja Alavesa, consisting of a blend of 85% Tempranillo and 15% Graciano grapes. I thought I’d try this wine again having previously singled it out at a Rioja tasting, although the vintage I received via retail is 2017, rather than 2019 as was in the tasting. The ‘Amaren’ range, translating to ‘of my mother’ in Basque, is a tribute by winemaker Juan Luis Cañas to his mother, Ángeles.
The meticulous process behind this wine involves harvesting grapes from premier vineyard locations, personally sorted by Juan Luis Cañas, ensuring that only the finest grapes are handpicked for production. The ageing process in American oak barrels for 16 months contributes to its distinct character. This wine has a Decanter Gold award and a high rating of 4.1 on Vivino.
The wine boasts a rich, deep ruby hue. The aroma is an inviting blend of blackberries, cherries and spices, leading to a superbly balanced interaction between oak and fruit. On the palate, it unfolds as rich and medium to full-bodied, offering a harmonious blend of ripe fruit, medium tannins and discernible notes of vanilla and chocolate, delivering a seamless taste experience without any abrupt transitions. The finish is long, adding to the allure. 14.5% ABV.
Priced at around £22.99, this wine is available at many independent wine stores. Both the 2017 and 2019 vintages are excellent. Its exceptional quality and seamless flavour profile make it one of my picks.
