Calvet Prestige Sauvignon Blanc Cuvée Fumée comes from Bordeaux, and Calvet is part of the large Les Grands Chais de France (LGCF) group. The Prestige name was chosen in honour of the very select “Diplôme du Prestige de France”, awarded to Maison Calvet in 1958.
Cuvée Fumée is the key phrase here. “Fumée” means “smoked” or “smoky” in French, so “Cuvée Fumée” on a wine label generally translates as a “smoky blend”, although the back label describes it as fresh and oaky.
The 2023 vintage comes in at 12% ABV and is made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc. In the glass it is pale lemon. It is unusual to air a white rather than a red, but this one benefits from a little breathing time to move past that initial petrol-like aroma. Once it settles, there are citrus, green apple and nettle aromas.
Taste-wise, it is all crisp citrus and green fruit, with a smoky spine running through it. It is dry, light-bodied, high in acidity, and finishes with medium length. The light smokiness is there, but it does not really feel oaky. What makes it stand out is that mix of freshness, bright acidity and oak-smoke influence.
Available for £8.25 from Ocado and £9 from Tesco.
