Vergelegen Millrace Red is a blend from one of South Africa’s most historic estates, in the Western Cape’s renowned Stellenbosch region. The estate dates back to 1700, founded by the Dutch governor at the Cape and has become known for producing wines in the Bordeaux style with a South African twist.
The name ‘Mill Race’ comes from the Dutch-engineered channel diverting water from the Lourens River to power the estate’s old mill wheel.
The wine brings together 41% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Syrah, 12% Cabernet Franc and a touch of Petit Verdot at 1%. It has been matured for twelve months in French oak, with 15% of that oak being new.
With an ABV of 14.5%, this is a bold yet balanced red. I suggest you give it at least half an hour to open up. At first, you catch the scent of cherry with a hint of something herbal and even floral, if you take a moment to breathe it in deeply. As it settles, oak becomes more pronounced. On the tongue, it brings bright redcurrant alongside hints of coffee and fresh herbs. It’s dry, with a medium to full body and smooth, low tannins. It shares the intent and profile of a Bordeaux blend but softens the grip, making it more immediately accessible.
Available at £10.00 in a Mix Six from Majestic.
