I’ve previously written about this wine, picking it out at Asda press tastings. The new 2024 vintage had a lot to live up to, so I was eager to see whether it matched the standard set by earlier years.
For anyone unfamiliar, Screaming Devil is a tongue-in-cheek spin on Whispering Angel, a name that quickly caught attention, helped along by a sleek bottle design and a price tag that made it an instant favourite among fans of more premium rosé.
At 12.5%, this ‘dupe’ is made from a blend of Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah grapes. It’s produced and bottled at source in Southern France, not shipped in bulk and bottled in the UK. The vineyard spans three departments: Var, Bouches-du-Rhône and Alpes-Maritimes and sits under the umbrella of the Les Grands Chais de France Group, a heavyweight in the French wine world known for turning out a wide portfolio.
This 2024 vintage picked up a Silver at the 2025 IWC with a very respectable 93 points.
There’s an intensity right from the start, with rich aromas of ripe white apricot and almond that are hard to miss. It’s bold in flavour, though hard to pin down exactly, a mix of peach and passion fruit with a slight tropical character and a grassy-ness freshness. This is a dry rosé with low residual sugar, but thanks to the ripe fruit character, it comes across as having a soft sweetness. There’s a lovely zesty length that lingers.
In my view, this continues to be one of the best budget-friendly rosés available. The elegant bottle, finished with a glass stopper, also makes for a smart upcycled water bottle once the wine’s gone Available at Asda for £12.97, though recently spotted with a reduction down to £9.97, and then with 25% off for buying six, that brought it to just £7.48. A serious bargain.
