I very briefly mentioned this wine in the Waitrose Autumn Press Tasting and it warranted closer exploration. Produced by the Spanish winery Bodegas La Val, this 2023 vintage Albariño is made without oak, offering a clean and expressive character.
The most intriguing aspect of this wine is how its profile transforms so dramatically as it warms, yet it maintains its appeal whether served very cool or at a warmer temperature. When served well chilled, this wine has a fresh, citrusy profile with a distinct salty, saline quality that reflects the ‘gentle coastal character’ noted on the back label and illustrated on the front label.
As it warms in the glass, tropical fruit aromas emerge, including pineapple and mango, while the taste gains a much richer mouthfeel with hints of lychee. The warming also enhances its versatility with food, allowing it to pair with stronger flavours.
Priced at £13.99 from Waitrose, it offers an great expression of the Albariño grape. With an ABV of 12.5%, it is both vegan and vegetarian-friendly.
For those interested in contrasting styles, the Bodegas La Val Gran Añada Albariño 2019, highlighted in the Waitrose Spring Press Tasting, also available from Waitrose, provides a markedly different experience with its oak-aged profile. While it comes at nearly double the price, it highlights the diverse winemaking approaches of La Val.
