Kew Series Carricante is made in collaboration with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, using Carricante, an indigenous Sicilian grape variety. This is the 2024 vintage, from vineyards on the slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily and has a refreshingly modest 11% ABV.
Made by W/O Wines from organically grown grapes, it is also vegan. The W/O philosophy is all about doing things without (W/O) compromise, with sustainability placed front and centre. That extends to the packaging, with a bottle made from 100% post-consumer recycled wild glass and no neck foil.
In the glass it is a pale lemon colour. Lemon and green apple lead the aroma, joined by smoke and a touch of candy floss. The first sip brings lively citrus with a little saline, mineral character, but there is much more going on through the middle, where the flavour becomes surprisingly deep. It feels like a journey, especially as the wine warms, with stone fruit emerging. It is dry, light to medium in body and high in acidity when served cool. That acidity comes across as softening noticeably as the temperature rises, changing the whole feel of the wine. The finish is long, slightly smoky and mineral, lingering well.
This is almost a wine with two personalities. Serve it at around 8°C and you get freshness, energy and crisp acidity. Let it move closer to room temperature and it becomes smoother, softer and more rounded. Make your choice, or better still, try it both ways.
Available from Laithwaites Wine at £11.00 per bottle when you mix 12 or more.
