Reviewed here as part of my awards25 series, this 2021 vintage picked up a Silver medal at the IWSC with 92 points. Produced and bottled by Falua Sociedade de Vinhos, it comes from Dão in northern Portugal and is made from 60% Mencía and 40% Touriga Nacional.
At 13.5% ABV, it opens with a delicate fragrance of violets that sets the tone for a red that favours nuance over weight. The taste brings a blend of candied red fruits and ripe black cherries, expressive but not overdone. There’s a hint of oak at the end of the taste, gently rounding it off. Tannins are slight but enough to keep the structure intact and the mouth texture is appealing, with a softness that makes it immediately approachable.
Although the bottle describes it as full-bodied, I found it closer to medium to full. It’s lighter than expected, but that works in its favour, with a balance that holds throughout and a flavour profile that impresses well beyond its price point.
At only £6.47 from Asda, or £4.85 during their 25% off periods, this is exceptional value and a clear highlight in the cheaper wine category.
