This is a new arrival at Asda and it’s an interesting next step for a wine brand that started life as a bit of a cheeky imitation. For anyone unfamiliar with Screaming Devil, the name is a tongue-in-cheek spin on Whispering Angel, the rosé that quickly caught everyone’s attention.
Asda’s original Screaming Devil Côtes de Provence still rosé was a runaway success, and now the supermarket is extending the range into sparkling wine. This time, though, it’s not trying to copy anything. There isn’t a sparkling Whispering Angel to imitate. Another difference is that Screaming Devil Brut carries the IGP Méditerranée designation rather than Côtes de Provence. While IGP Méditerranée is generally considered less prestigious, it also offers producers greater freedom in how and where they make their wines, which can have its advantages.
That said, this is still very much a wine with Provençal roots. It’s produced by Château Terrebonne, a wine estate in the heart of Provence, France, between Aix-en-Provence and Saint-Tropez. The blend brings together Grenache Gris, Cinsault, Syrah and Grenache Noir. At 11.5% ABV, it’s relatively low in alcohol and it’s non-vintage.
In the glass, it’s a lovely golden colour, with a delicate pear aroma. Take a sip and there’s cranberry and redcurrant, accompanied by enough acidity to give it a refreshing lift. Despite having Brut on the label, there’s a very slight sweetness to it, followed by an enjoyable sherberty finish.
After trying it, I found myself wondering where exactly Screaming Devil Brut fits in. What is it most like? And actually, perhaps that’s the interesting thing. Screaming Devil started out as a dupe of another wine, but now it’s becoming a brand in its own right, now with something different to offer, more of lifestyle message than a wine style. However, If I had to make a comparison, I’d say its closest match, both in terms of flavour and price, would probably be a Prosecco Rosé.
As I write this, Screaming Devil Brut, exclusive to Asda, is priced at £12.66. The timing of its launch couldn’t be more appropriate. A wine called ‘Screaming Devil Brut’ is just right for Halloween! It’s clearly well placed for Halloween entertaining, before moving straight into Bonfire Night, Christmas, New Year’s Eve and all those other excuses to pop open a bottle of fizz throughout the festive season.
