This is a red wine that captures the character of the southern Rhône’s Ventoux appellation, an area defined as much by its striking scenery as its distinctive wines. Towering over the region is Mount Ventoux, an iconic landmark known to cycling fans worldwide as a legendary stage finish of Le Tour de France.
This 2022 vintage, 14.5% ABV, is a blend of Shiraz, Grenache and Carignan, a combination that brings together rich fruit, spice and structure.
The wine begins with a lovely red fruit aroma, delicately laced with a hint of caramel. It’s a very inviting and beguiling aroma that initially outshines the palate, as the flavours, though fruity and pleasant, are somewhat more subdued than the aroma suggests. On tasting, it comes across as somewhere between medium and full-bodied, with a gentle spice that lingers on the finish, adding a touch of warmth and complexity.
However, if left to rest and revisited the next day, the experience shifts. The aromas soften noticeably, allowing the flavours to take centre stage with greater intensity. Notes of blackberry and liquorice emerge more prominently, bringing depth and richness to the wine. Throughout, the mouthfeel remains satisfying, lending a smooth, well-rounded quality.
Though reviews on the Sainsbury’s website are very positive, they are a little dated. Nonetheless, at £11.50 full price, and at the time of writing available for just £8.63 with a 25% discount, it offers excellent value for a wine with this entertaining, shifting character.
