I first encountered Domaine Philippon Frères Chablis at a Lidl press wine tasting and was impressed enough to seek it out again. My aim was to confirm that the version available in shops matched the quality I initially experienced.
This Chablis, with an ABV of 12.5%, comes from Burgundy and is made from 100% Chardonnay grapes. It’s noteworthy that Lidl has opted to include the named producer for this wine, a move that’s somewhat unusual for their offerings. Even though it’s a relatively new addition to Lidl’s core range it already has an admirable 4.0 on Vivino.
The wine has great aromas of pear and golden delicious apple, balanced by a dry but honeyed palate. It’s fresh and smooth, with fruity notes complemented by hints of peach and apricot. These flavours develop into a medium finish. The wine’s vibrant profile make it very food-friendly, with enough character to stand up to a range of dishes.
At £13.99 at Lidl, this is inexpensive for a Chablis, and exceeds what one might expect at this price point. It’s excellent value and a wine worth seeking out.
