The M&S Collection series is their premium wine range, designed to elevate their offerings and showcase winemaking craftsmanship. Among these, the Amarone della Valpolicella 2021 is, so far, my favourite in the collection.
This wine, produced by Cantine Giacomo Montresor, a winery with roots dating back to 1892, comes in at 14.5% ABV. While on the lower end of the typical Amarone spectrum (14-16% ABV, often exceeding 15%), this balance hints on what’s to come.
A blend of 60% Corvina, 20% Corvinone, and 10% Rondinella grapes, it employs the traditional appassimento technique. The grapes are partially dried for up to 120 days, losing at least 30% of their water content, resulting in a concentration of sugars and flavours. This process imparts the wine’s signature richness and depth.
Aromatically, the wine evokes ripe black cherries. The taste is luscious, with brambly blackberries and deep cherry-raspberry notes, underscored by a subtle spice and a touch of chocolate. Medium to full-bodied with surprisingly low tannins, it is lighter than expected for an Amarone, offering a mellower, smooth and almost delicate interpretation of this classic style. Its seamless flavour progression has no abruptness, making it highly approachable. Unlike more traditional Amarone, which are often darker, more tannic, and more oak-driven, this wine reflects a more contemporary shift towards a more balanced and fruit-forward profile. Perfect for immediate enjoyment, it requires no further ageing.
Retailing at £24, it is available from M&S and Ocado.
