This wine stood out at the Waitrose Spring Press Tasting, so it deserved a closer look. From New Zealand’s North Island, this wine comes from Escarpment Winery, located in Martinborough. The name itself, Escarpment, refers to a long, steep slope that borders a plateau, reflecting the distinctive landscape that shapes this corner of the region.
A quick glance at customer reviews on Waitrose’s website reveals mixed reactions, though much of the criticism stems from the 2022 vintage, which reportedly turned out cloudy. What matters here, however, is the 2023 release, and that’s the one really worth seeking out.
It sits at 13.5% abv and has a pale to medium ruby colour with a touch of browning. The aroma brings together red cherry and cranberry with thyme and earthy, lovely savoury tones. On the tongue, it offers delicate red fruit lifted by a subtle herbal and very savoury edge. This is a dry wine, with a light to medium body and soft to medium tannins. The lovely savoury profile works especially well with food, though I also like it when sipped on its own.
Obtained from Waitrose, currently at £21, it’s priced more competitively than at many other retailers. If that still feels slightly above your usual spend, keep an eye out for Waitrose 25% offers that can turn this into a very accessible treat.
