Fairview has been producing Pinotage since the 1970s, with vintner Charles Back continuing the tradition with this wine. This particular vintage, from 2022, has an ABV of 13.5% and has been aged in seasoned oak barrels. The 2020 vintage previously won a bronze medal at the International Wine Challenge.
Pinotage was created in 1925 by Abraham Izak Perold, the first Professor of Viticulture at Stellenbosch University, as a hybrid of Pinot Noir and Cinsaut. Known for its rich, deep colour and bold flavour, this uniquely South African grape variety has since become a key part of the country’s winemaking.
This wine benefits from a short time to breathe, whether in the glass or a decanter, allowing its character to fully develop. There are smoky clove aromas, leading into a medium-bodied palate. The flavours are very slightly oaky, with notes of plum, raspberry, oak, vanilla and smoke, accompanied by that distinctive, slightly burnt note typical of Pinotage, which adds to its appeal. The wine is particularly smooth with a pleasant mouthfeel, making it a great example of this style.
Imported by Liberty Wines, it is sold exclusively by Waitrose. It is usually priced at £11, but I was able to pick it up on offer for £8.49.
