Pinotage is a grape variety that often flies under the radar and often offers hidden, affordable treasures at least for me. Originally cultivated in 1925 by Abraham Izak Perold, the first Professor of Viticulture at Stellenbosch University, Pinotage is a crossbreed of Pinot Noir and Cinsaut. Renowned for its rich colour and bold flavours, this grape is synonymous with South Africa, though it has also found a home in other regions, including New Zealand, Zimbabwe, Switzerland and Israel.
This wine comes from the Majestic ‘Chosen by Majestic’ range, a more affordable alternative to its Definition range. Offering exceptional value at a sub-£10 price point, this range caters to those seeking high-quality wines at accessible prices.
This 2022 vintage Pinotage from Robertson Winery is a great example of the range. With an ABV of 13.5%, it comes from the Robertson region and benefits from grapes provided by 22 specially selected family growers.
Known for producing wines that can divide opinion, Pinotage often comes with distinctive characteristics. This particular bottle, however, avoids the excessive volatile aromas sometimes associated with the grape. Instead, it delights with a smoky blackcurrant aroma and a full-bodied palate, marked by smoky and blackcurrant flavours and a wonderfully rounded mouthfeel.
The finish is notably burnt-like, a feature that may polarise opinion but I liked a lot. This quality makes it an excellent companion for food, especially smoky dishes. It paired beautifully with a paprika-based Mexican meal I had and would undoubtedly complement smoked meats. If you’re not fond of the burnt-like finish, let the opened wine sit for a day or two and you’ll notice the edges soften beautifully.
Exclusively available at Majestic for £7.99 when purchased as part of a Mix Six, this wine offers unbeatable value for those who enjoy a full-on smoky profile.
