Royal Tokaji Late Harvest

Posted by

The 2021 vintage was a particularly great year for Tokaji wines and this Royal Tokaji Late Harvest showcases a wine from this year. Founded as a joint venture between about 62 local wine growers and international investors, including the celebrated wine author Hugh Johnson, Royal Tokaji has a mission to restore and preserve the quality of Tokaji wines.

While Tokaji Aszú wines are more concentrated and typically reserved for special occasions, Late Harvest such as this offers a lighter, more versatile option. Late Harvest more easily pairs with a variety of dishes, from cheese and desserts to something unexpected like Thai curry.

This Late Harvest is crafted from a blend of Furmint, Hárslevelű and Muscat grapes. The sweetness and flavours are intensified by leaving the grapes on the vine for an extended ripening period, allowing natural sugars to concentrate.

With an alcohol content of 11% ABV, the wine balances lightness and complexity. A portion of the wine is aged in oak barrels for six months, enhancing its depth. The aroma is floral, with enticing orange aromas. Tasting, it’s even better, offering ripe pear, apricot fruit, hints of orange peel and spice. Unlike some dessert wines that can be cloying, this Tokaji is balanced by some freshness. Its light sweetness and clean finish ensure it doesn’t overwhelm food, unlike some over-sweet Sauternes.

This Royal Tokaji Late Harvest is new at Sainsbury’s in a 500ml bottle. It’s priced at £12 but frequently on offer for £10 and during their 25% off wine events, it can be found for as low as £7.50.
