Typicity Tool

Posted by

When tasting many wines during large wine tastings, I often find my brain becomes a bit numb trying to pinpoint what different things actually taste like. I’m also aware that I need to broaden my wine vocabulary and include a wider range of descriptive terms. With that in mind, I felt I needed a tool to help me better understand wine typicity and what a wine should taste like.

I had a look around but couldn’t find anything that really did what I wanted, so I ended up creating one myself. It gives me a starting point when my mind is tired and I need a bit of inspiration. I have built it just for my own use, but you’re welcome to give it a try as well.

You can search by grape variety or wine style, or you can explore the data by country, wine colour or type, grape and style. It’s still very rough around the edges, but already quite useful. At the moment, it has 372 entries, and I’m continuing to work on expanding its scope.

From another angle, it can be handy when you’re in a shop or browsing online for wines, helping you get a feel for what a wine might be like before buying it.

Feel free to provide feedback, particularly if you find missing styles or it needs refinement.
