Majestic Showcase

Posted by

In December 2024, with so few press tastings in the calendar, this gave me the opportunity to visit my local Woking Majestic for their showcase tasting. The event featured nine wines, arranged across three sections: white, red and sweet/fortified.

The tasting began on a high note with the Taittinger Brut Réserve, a sparkling classic that hardly requires an introduction, let alone any detailed mention.

The whites included a Chablis, a Viognier, and a Chenin Blanc. Of these, the standout for me was the St Ferreol Viognier 2023 (13%). Partially fermented and matured in French oak on its lees, it offered a subtle oak influence on the nose, complemented by rich flavours of apricot and ripe peach. It struck me as a versatile wine for holiday season, likely to pair beautifully with chicken or turkey. Priced at £14.99 as part of a mix-six selection.

The reds featured a French Pinot Noir, a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru, and a Rioja. The standout for me was the Viña Ardanza Reserva Rioja 2017 which I had previously encountered at a Wines of Spain tasting, though in its 2015 vintage. The 2017 vintage particularly impressed with its aroma of sweet cherries and redcurrants, as well as delivering the usual intense and well-balanced palate. It felt even more aromatic than its predecessor, with excellent length and a lingering aftertaste. Priced at £16.24 in a mix-six deal, it is a premium choice. However, we were subtly encouraged to also consider Majestic’s own Definition Viña Majestica Rioja Reserva, made by the same producer, La Rioja Alta, which offers a more accessible option at £12.99 for a mix-six.

The two sweeter wines on offer were an intriguing Californian Muscat and a port. The Elysium Black Muscat (15%) stood out for its distinctive character. It offered aromas of lychee, cinnamon and perhaps clove, followed by intense flavours of blackberry and raspberry, with a hint of dark chocolate on the finish. Sweet but not cloying, it would pair wonderfully with less sugary desserts, particularly chocolate-based dishes or even blue cheese. £13.99 for a half bottle in a mix-six deal.

A special thanks to the team at Majestic Woking, who were as professional, enthusiastic and knowledgeable as ever, making the experience all the more enjoyable.
