Kew Gardens Mencía

Posted by

Launched in 2023 as part of a collaboration between Laithwaites and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, the ‘Kew Series by Laithwaites’ highlights lesser-known grape varieties while promoting the importance of plant diversity in viticulture worldwide. The latest addition to the series is a fresh and different red wine made from the newly-revived Mencía grape.

This 2022 vintage comes from Bierzo, a region in northwest Spain renowned for its expertise in Mencía. The wine undergoes three months of barrel aging, adding depth and character to its profile. Visually, it features a natural aesthetic, with a naked cork (no capsule) and a beautifully designed label that complements the Kew ethos.

Aromatically, it opens with a red fruit aroma reminiscent of raspberries. While labelled as medium-bodied, it leans closer to a light-to-medium profile, yet carries a relatively high 13% ABV characteristic of Mencía from Bierzo. The initial sip reveals floral notes, particularly violets, which are initially quite vibrant. The wine also features a marked backbone of minerality, giving freshness and finishes with dryness. Its lighter style makes it an good choice to serve slightly chilled, pairing well with lighter white meat dishes or risotto.

At £12.99 when purchased as part of a Mix 12+ from Laithwaites, Kew Gardens Mencía offers an opportunity to explore something different.
