This 2019 Rioja Reserva is made by winemaker César Fernández at El Coto. The Tempranillo grapes are sourced from the three prestigious areas of Rioja, Alavesia, Alta and Oriental, ensuring a rich and diverse flavour profile. The wine is aged for 24 months in American oak barrels, which imparts a distinct and inviting aroma of oak that is very aromatic.
I first encountered this wine during the M&S Spring Tasting, and it caught my attention. I often buy wines I have previously enjoyed at tastings to see how they hold up on sale. I am pleased to find that this wine maintains excellent consistency. It’s worth noting that while the 2019 vintage is currently available, I also found the 2018 vintage sold alongside it in stores. This review focuses on the Reserva, identifiable by its yellow Reserva label, distinct from the dark blue Gran Reserva label. This Reserva has previously gained acclaim, with the 2017 vintage earning a Decanter Silver award.
It is full-bodied with medium tannins and it offers a great array of flavours including cherry, liquorice, vanilla and spice. For the best experience, allow this wine to breathe for a short while, even just in the glass. This brief aeration helps to fully develop its complex profile. Priced at £11 from M&S.
