Exclusively available at Majestic, this special release of Château Méaume has been introduced to honour 45 years of partnership between the winery and the retailer. It’s a significant bottle for both, marking a relationship that began in 1980 when the British owners, Alan and Sue Johnson-Hill, attended the opening of Majestic’s very first store. Their son, Mark, now leads the winemaking, taking the reins for this 2019 vintage.
Made predominantly from Merlot grown near the famous regions of Pomerol and Saint-Émilion, this Bordeaux Supérieur benefits from low-yield vines and has been matured in oak for no less than a year. With 14.5% ABV, it’s generous yet balanced.
The colour is beginning to show its age, leaning towards a gentle browning. The aroma opens with blackcurrant, cedar and a touch of tobacco, all inviting and well integrated. On the tongue, there’s a core of dark fruit with layers of cedar and chocolate giving depth. It’s dry, with a medium to full body and tannins have softened with time, hence the ‘matured’ in the name, making it very approachable now. Letting it breathe reveals some earthiness and by the next day, it evolves into something rounder and even more enjoyable.
Priced at £17.00 as part of the Mix Six deal at Majestic, it’s a mature and rewarding choice for those who appreciate Bordeaux character mixed with a little English heritage.
