Virgen del Galir Val do Galir Godello

Posted by

Virgen del Galir Val do Galir Godello 2023 is a white wine from Valdeorras in Galicia, Spain. Produced by Bodegas Virgen, which was purchased by CVNE, a notable name in Rioja, back in 2018, this wine reflects the region’s traditional winemaking techniques. The wine has gained recognition, with a solid 91 points from Robert Parker.

The 2023 vintage comes in at a robust 14% ABV, making it one of the stronger expressions of Godello from the area. Made from 100% Godello grapes, this wine is fermented using indigenous yeasts and aged for three months on its lees, adding to its complex flavour profile.

On the nose, there’s a subtle smokiness, enhanced by the oak ageing process, which lends depth to the aroma. The palate reveals a yeasty, leesy character, intertwined with notes of lime and an underlying pasta-like savouriness. It paired well with the mushroom pasta dish I was having at the time. An interesting aspect of this Godello is how it evolves with temperature. When cold from the refrigerator, it exhibits a distinctive salty edge, but as it warms, the intensity of the flavours deepens, with the saltiness still lingering slightly.

Retailing between £16.95 and £20.00, you can find it at various wine merchants such as Fareham Wine Cellars (£16.95), Evingtons (£18.69) and The Bottle Shop (£19.95). For lovers of aromatic whites, this wine offers a taste of north-western Spain.
