UK is Australia’s Largest Wine Market By Volume

Posted by

Wine Australia has a new report on the period 12 months to 30 September 2024. The report on Australian wine exports highlights a 34% growth in export value to AUD 2.39 billion in the 12 months ending September 2024, reaching its highest levels since 2021. Exports surged particularly due to the lifting of tariffs on Australian wine exports to China, which saw a marked increase. Export volume to other destinations, however, fell slightly by 3%, with notable declines in the United States.

For the UK, Australia’s largest market by volume and second by value, exports rebounded with a 3% increase in both value (to AUD 362 million) and volume (to 222 million litres). This was primarily driven by bulk-packed white wine, with average values rising to the highest levels seen since 2007. The majority of exports to the UK remain bulk-packed, 90% of volume, which allows the wine to be packaged locally. Packaged exports to the UK declined slightly by 2% in volume, though average value per litre rose modestly. The UK market’s response to recent changes in alcohol duty and consumer demand has seen Australian wine maintaining a strong presence, leading in off-trade (retail) sales with a 23% market share, ahead of Italian and French wines. Exports to the UK saw positive growth, with increases in both red and white varieties, notably Chardonnay and Shiraz.

A great data visualisation of the export numbers is available in the Wine Australia Dashboard.
