Taste the Difference Bio Bio Chilean Pinot Noir

Posted by

This was a real star from Sainsbury’s Spring Summer 2025 press tasting and I knew I had to revisit it properly on its own. Sourced from the Bio Bio Valley in Chile, this wine is made by Diego Covarrubias of Viña Indómita, a respected name in Chilean winemaking and a producer often praised by critic James Suckling.

This Pinot Noir, from the 2023 vintage, has been aged for six months in French oak and comes in at 13.5% ABV. Aromatically, it opens with a savoury profile balanced by a huge burst of cherry, setting the tone for a dry yet impressively fruity experience. The wine has a medium body with a flavour profile that brings to mind violet sweets layered with a touch of earthy character.

What really makes it shine is its rare ability to find harmony between fruitiness and savoury, something that many Pinot Noirs tend to lean one way or the other on. Fruit wise, there’s even a whisper of something reminiscent of a particularly good Fleurie, which adds another layer of charm.

While this is the 2023 vintage, I’ve noted that the 2024 release is now circulating and has already picked up recognition at both the IWC and IWSC 2025 competitions. At just £10 full price, or an unbeatable £7.50 during 25% off promotions, this is a lovely wine that represents excellent value.
