Pommery was the first Champagne house to introduce a Brut style with low dosage back in 1874. ‘Brut Royal’ is the flagship non-vintage cuvée of the house, created to capture the essence of Pommery’s style, which is centred on liveliness, finesse and freshness.
This non-vintage wine sits at 12.5% ABV and is composed of 34% Chardonnay, 33% Pinot Noir and 33% Pinot Meunier. The fruit comes from 40 carefully selected villages across the Côte des Blancs, the Montagne de Reims and other areas of the Champagne region. It is matured in bottle for three years on lees, then spends a further six months after disgorgement before release. The packaging is bright and eye-catching, with a colourful box.
In the glass, the bubbles are tiny and persistent. A tip is to let it warm considerably, as straight from the fridge it can seem reserved and muted even after twenty minutes. It truly comes into its own after around thirty-five minutes, revealing aromas of crisp apple, lemon, a touch of honey and peach. The flavours carry through with almond, citrus and biscuit, finishing with a character that feels lightly off-dry.
Interestingly, when tasted alongside the Pommery English Sparkling a few days earlier, the comparison showed that the English expression offered more brioche character but also more pronounced acidity.
‘Brut Royal’ is £32.00 as part of a Mix Six from Majestic.
