This Pinot Noir rosé from Chile is made by the renowned Chilean winery Viña Leyda. It comes from Chile’s Valle de Leyda in the San Antonio Valley, part of the Aconcagua region. Viña Leyda is widely recognised and is the most awarded coastal winery in Chile. Its reputation is further bolstered by the achievements of its team, with viticulturist Tomas Rivera being named Best of the Year in Tim Atkin’s 2022 Chile report, two years after Viviana Navarette was selected as his Best Winemaker.
This 2023 vintage sits at 12.5% ABV and is made entirely from Pinot Noir. The grapes are sourced from the El Maitén and El Granito vineyards, both influenced strongly by the nearby ocean.
The wine appears slightly darker in the bottle compared to other rosés. Once poured, it shows a lovely copper colour in the glass. It doesn’t offer much in flavour when very cold, so it’s worth letting it warm up for about 30 minutes. With time, it reveals a lemony but slightly musky aroma. The taste begins with strawberry, shifts into cranberry, then brings in melon through the middle taste. The texture in the mouth is very satisfying, with a touch of tannin that sets it apart from most rosés and will make it particularly well suited to food.
This is not your flouncy Provence style, but a more serious rosé with its own unique character. It is available via Enotria & Co. and also from The Great Wine Co., priced at £15.50 per single bottle and £13.95 when you buy a case of 12.
