Blondel Champagne Premier Cru

Posted by

I first discovered this Champagne at an Asda tasting, where it immediately stood out to me. I was keen to try it again, particularly as I’ve found that some Champagnes I’ve enjoyed at tastings have often not lived up to expectations when revisited later. Thankfully, that wasn’t the case this time.

Produced by Blondel from a single block of vines in the village of Ludes, located on the northern side of the Montagne de Reims, this wine comes from a site classified as Premier Cru. It borders some of the region’s most renowned Grand Cru villages, including Mailly-Champagne, Verzenay and Verzy, which adds to its pedigree.

The blend is made up of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay and has spent over 24 months maturing in the bottle. It sits at 12% ABV.

The wine pours a slightly golden hue and has a striking aroma, rich in apricot character. The flavour is immediate and expressive, showing brioche, sherbet and apple, followed by a nutty touch, perhaps almond, with a soft, caramel-like finish. It’s an elegant yet intense Champagne, with a real presence. As it warmed in the glass, it only grew more engaging and layered.

Although it’s a non-vintage, the previous version, with different label, received commendation from the IWSC in 2024. Currently available at Asda for £23.98, down from £27.96, it represents great value for a Champagne of this character and depth.
