The 2023 vintage from Agricola Surani is made from Primitivo grapes and aged in oak for a year. It has earned a strong reputation, with 96% of 622 reviewers at Majestic saying they’d buy it again and a solid 4.0 rating on Vivino.
The aroma is generous with black cherry, fig and spice, hinting at richness, but the wine reveals something brighter once poured. Its colour is a lively red cherry, a touch lighter than expected for this type of wine and a wine sitting at 14% ABV. Flavour-wise, it leans into lush cherry fruit, supported by a medium to full body and smooth, low-level tannins. The finish lingers with woody herbs and a hint of oak that gradually unfolds with time in the glass.
Compared to another Primitivo di Manduria tasted side by side, this version stood out for its restraint. It sidesteps the syrupy weight that can dominate others in this style. Vanilla and oak aren’t upfront, only emerging clearly after an hour or so, which makes it quite changeable between first pour and a bit later. This shift adds interest, making the wine feel layered and expressive over time.
It paired effortlessly with an Italian platter, its freshness making it a much more versatile and food-friendly option than heavier interpretations. For £11.00 as part of a Mix Six deal from Majestic, this bottle offers both character and value, with enough complexity to reward a slower, more curious approach.
