When it comes to Chilean wines, Concha Y Toro is a mass producer that delivers wines that are both accessible and enjoyable. With a commendable score of 3.9 on Vivino and a ranking as the #2 top Chilean Sauvignon Blanc in the UK, expectations were high.
As someone who enjoys the robust flavours of the sister wine, Diablo Black Cabernet Sauvignon, and the crispness of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, I was intrigued to see how this particular bottle would measure up. The initial nose promised a tropical adventure, with notes of passion fruit leading the way. However, upon tasting, the wine took an unexpected turn. It was creamy, almost veering into Chardonnay territory, which was surprising.
Digging a bit deeper for this review, I discovered that the wine is not a pure Sauvignon Blanc. It’s actually a blend, comprising 85% Sauvignon Blanc, 10% Chardonnay and 5% Pedro Jimenez grapes. This blend explains the creamy texture and the Chardonnay-like qualities that make it distinct from a typical Sauvignon Blanc.
While this wine wasn’t quite to my personal taste, it’s easy to see how it could appeal to those who enjoy both Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. It straddles the line between the two, offering a different tasting experience that would pair well with, for example, a chicken dish.
In summary, while it may not have met my quest for a Chilean Sauvignon Blanc that rivals those from New Zealand, it’s a different wine that many might find enjoyable. Available from Tesco, Asda for around £8 to £10.
