Greek wines are enjoying a growing presence in the UK market, with particular popularity around Assyrtiko, a vibrant and flavourful grape variety, with wineries such as Kir-Yianni leading the way. Assyrtiko’s profile is often compared to the boldness of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, though it brings its own distinct blend of mineral, citrus and peach with a lively acidity.
The Co-op has introduced a new Assyrtiko under its ‘Irresistible’ range, although a close look at the small-type on the bottle label reveals this wine is actually produced by Kir-Yianni. Having recently sampled Kir-Yianni branded Assyrtiko at a Greek wine tasting and reviewed the wine separately, I was intrigued to see how the Co-op’s version would compare.
The Co-op’s 2023 vintage comes in at 13% ABV, with a key difference in the blend: rather than 100% Assyrtiko, this wine contains 85% Assyrtiko and 15% Viognier. This addition actually lends a slightly more complex profile with layers of peach and honeysuckle, setting it apart from the pure Assyrtiko Kir-Yianni bottle. For me, the Co-op version has a slightly better taste, with deep citrus and nectarine notes alongside Assyrtiko’s hallmark acidity and minerality. Like its Kir-Yianni branded counterpart, this wine is particularly temperature sensitive. I found it most enjoyable when well chilled, though it’s fun experimenting to find your preferred balance of flavours.
At only £10, compared to the typical £16+ price for a Kir-Yianni-branded Assyrtiko, this Co-op Irresistible Assyrtiko offers impressive value. Its high acidity and full on flavour profile make it a great pairing for seafood or pasta in white sauce, and at this price, it’s a must buy.
